Browns GM Farmer makes first big move

The Ray Farmer era is here.

After being named general manager of the Cleveland Browns a little over two weeks ago, Ray Farmer is already making some pretty big changes to the current roster.

According to multiple reports, Farmer and the Browns have released veteran linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, who was due $4 million in a roster bonus next month.

Jackson, a fan favorite, had been with the Browns for the past eight seasons and had started all sixteen games for the past three years.

The Browns reportedly tried to restructure Jackson's current contract, but the two sides were pretty far apart. Both sides have said the move was mutual and both have no hard feelings toward each other.

However, this move is kind of weird.

We know the team is sitting pretty in terms of the salary cap, so why wouldn't they pony up some cash to pay a guy like Jackson?

I understand that he probably doesn't deserve the $6.6 million he was due this upcoming season, but I certainly thought they could have figured something out in terms of a restructured contract. Hard to believe the two sides were that far apart.

On the other hand, maybe they can now sign Alex Mack or T.J. Ward? Or maybe even both? Or maybe even some decent free agents? Who knows.

It sucks to see a guy like Jackson go, but I totally understand it from a business point. And you have to remember, this is a business.
